L’Abri is French for “shelter.” The first L’Abri community was founded in Switzerland in 1955 by Francis and Edith Schaeffer.
There are currently ten L’Abri communities scattered around the world and more information on each individual branch, as well as their current undertakings, can be found at: www.labri.org. In short, we strive to be communities of “shelter” for people both inside and outside of the Christian faith, looking to address their doubts, concerns or problems with the claims Christianity makes on their lives and the world.
The Southborough branch of L’Abri opened for students in 1979, and continues to keep its doors open three terms each year. Students may visit for short or long stays to engage in personalized, independent study, guided by a tutor. Founders and branch directors, Dick and Mardi Keyes now live offsite, while continuing to be involved in the life of the branch. Resident workers include Ben Keyes and Nickaela Fiore-Keyes, Mary Frances Giles, Sarah and Joshua Chestnut and Dave and Anna Friedrich.

While this blog gives an “online presence” to our life and work, we do not intend to create or foster a virtual community via the comment section. Hello Everyone,
It is good to hear news from you all and to know that you are on the mend from the illnesses you’ve suffered. And, Josh, what a fabulous job on the blog! It reminds me of the fun activities, wonderful food, and special community that L’Abri of Southborough is. I will never be the same after my stay there last summer.
I have a suggestion for the blog that I hope you will consider. Do you think a listing of desired books, a book wish list, would be a nice feature? Then, Amazon “junkies” like me could periodically send books for the library from your wish list. I’m still pouring over the many titles that I was unable to read during my visit. And, I’m sure there are many others who’d like to give something back to L’Abri Southborough as well.
I think of you each day and pray for L’Abri, hoping that someday I’ll be able to visit again.
